Have any tips on where the owner might be or memories related to this shop? Please drop me a line.
"They have moved to New Jersey," said Robert Decoteau, the Grenadian-born preacher with a master's degree, and owner for twenty-seven years of Elm Hardware, located down the block from the former 5K Perfumes. He wasn't referring to the owner of 5K Perfumes, though. He did not know anything about that shop. Rather he was talking about all the small businesses and long-term residents who used to be his clients. "They have disappeared," he lamented. Unable to meet the rising rents, they have abandoned Greeley Square to chain stores (Home Depot, H & M) and to new skyscrapers. According to the Wall Street Journal, such an exodus was not accidental. It was part of real estate developers' vision of transforming the area below 34th Street "from a wholesale and flower district into a high-end residential and retail corridor."
What I know about 5K Perfumes, which is not to say a great deal, comes from a forty-something year-old man, Pedro, originally from Puebla, Mexico, who works at a neighboring building. Between fielding incoming calls at the front desk, he told me how he had previously worked upstairs for Cosmos Boutique, located two floors above the former 5K Perfumes. The owner, he told me, leased the space from its neighbor, Jewelry Palace. But around 2003, Pedro thinks, they terminated his lease, as they had decided to incorporate the space into their own shop. What became of the owner of 5K Perfumes? Pedro was not sure but he had heard that he might possibly have moved to New Jersey to set up a similar shop there. If he did, it is operating under a different name. I have thus far not been able to find a shop with a similar name operating in New Jersey, much less the owner of the original 5K Perfumes.
