Have any tips on where the owner might be or memories related to this shop? Please drop me a line.
Old abuts new on this western corner of Midtown, making for awkward juxtapositions. The vaguely reassuring blandness of the local chain, Gregorys Coffee (est. 2006), shares the block with the mild tackiness of the tourist dive, O'Reilly's Pub & Restaurant (est. 1976). Across the street sits Costume Jewelry, in the space where B.R. Fashion once held court. According to someone that works there, a slightly reticent man with a bright white turban and short, scraggly beard, Costume Jewelry has been around for about a decade. Beyond that I know very little about this wholesale jeweler's history or about what else might have transpired in the space after B.R. Fashion closed its doors.
What was the name of the original shop owner, whose initials, "B" and "R" presumably inspired the name for this shop? There was apparently a shop at 68 West 39th Street at Sixth Avenue that was in operation between 1977 and 1993, that went by the name of B & R Fashion, Inc. Did the owner close this location and then reopen at 59 West 31st Street? Perhaps I'll never know. Neither current occupants nor neighboring businesses had any idea who owned the business nor when they closed exactly. It seemed that no one with whom I spoke had a memory of the neighborhood that stretched beyond ten years.
