Have any tips on where the owner might be or memories related to this shop? Please drop me a line.
According to the owner of the oldest retail establishment on this West Village block, Barney's Hardware, so many businesses have come and gone in the space where Ikon Estate Jewelry used to be that he cannot keep track. For now, at any rate, it is occupied by Body Factory Skin Care, whose unfortunate name suggests a conveyor-belt approach to beauty. Hopefully their industrial-strength name will help them break the curse to which the owner of Barney's Hardware seemed to refer. Or maybe it's not so much a curse as a contagion. Lately, the winds of revolving-door-real estate seem to have picked up speed, taking with them Charlie Mom, an old school Chinese restaurant that had been dishing up and delivering reliable, Chinese-American staples since the early 1980s.
Ikon Estate Jewelry seems to have been the wallflower at the party or the quiet student in the back of the classroom on this stretch of West 11th at Sixth Avenue. When I spoke to the owners of the few shops on the block or across the street that have been there longer than ten years, there are only a couple of them left, no one recalls having ever seen Ikon Estate Jewelry. Yet, I know it has to have been there. The address, the architectural clues, they all check out. But I fear that the story behind the shop and its owner might be lost. None of my research has turned up any information about its dates of operation or about the owner.
