A couple of years ago The Hair & Color Bar opened in the same space where The Blouse Shop, and another hair salon, used to be. If you wander along Lexington Avenue between East 83rd and East 84th Streets you'll discover a glut of other small retail and service-oriented shop fronts, which unlike so many other stretches of Manhattan, are aimed at meeting the needs of residents. Tailors and dry cleaners, nail salons and shoe repair shops share the block with pizza places and the city's oldest diner, Lexington Candy Shop Luncheonette, which has occupied the same corner since 1925.
It did not take too long to find the space out of which this shop operated, as its neighbor to the north, Caligor Pharmacy, was still in operation. A search using the New York Department of State, Division of Corporations database produced the name Blouse Shop, Inc. that was in business from 1987 to 2004. There I also found the name of a contact person, Fred S. Rosenfeld, with a West End Avenue address. The letter I sent to him was returned by the post office. An internet search brought to my attention a New York Magazine mention of a certain The Blouse Shop, Inc. that was still in business in 1999, located further east at 247 East 83rd Street, at Second Avenue. A stroll to that address revealed a block undergoing a complete gut renovation. Or more like a vivisection. In short, so far only a string of dead ends on this pursuit. For now.
